The Longest Day: Why We Wear Purple in June

By R R

Around the summer solstice each June — the day with the most daylight of the entire year — people across the world mark The Longest Day, an awareness effort of the Alzheimer's Association. The idea behind it is quietly beautiful. The longest, brightest day of the year stands in for the long days faced by everyone living with Alzheimer's and other dementias, and by the people who care for them. On the day with the most light, we shine some of it toward a disease that so often keeps families in the dark.

If you're a caregiver reading this, this day is, in a real sense, for you.

Because here's a truth the awareness campaigns sometimes circle around without saying plainly: the longest days don't only belong to the person with the diagnosis. They belong to you. The day that starts before dawn and stretches past midnight. The day that repeats the same question a hundred times. The day you spend grieving someone who's still alive, managing a body and a mind that no longer follow the old rules, loving someone who may not remember you tomorrow. Those are the long days The Longest Day is really about.

So if you do anything to mark it, let it include something for yourself. Wear the signature purple if you like — many do, as a small visible sign that this fight is shared. Reach out to one other person who understands, because isolation is one of the heaviest parts of this road and connection is one of the few things that genuinely lightens it. And let the day's symbolism land where it should: you are not carrying this alone, even when it feels that way, and millions of people are turning toward the same light you are.

At Geriatric Care Solutions, this is the spirit our work runs on all year, not just in June. Our Montessori-based dementia care is built to bring light into the daily life of someone with dementia — to find what they can still do, what still brings them joy, what still connects them to the people they love. And it's built just as much to bring relief to the family caregivers carrying the long days, so that no one has to face them with nothing left.

The longest day of the year eventually gives way to evening. The longest days of caregiving feel like they never will. They're easier, though, when someone helps you carry them. On this day especially — let yourself be one of the people the light is for.
