What Veterans Families Should Know About Aid and Attendance

By R R

He served his country for twenty-two years. Deployments, transfers, sacrifice. He didn't ask for anything in return.

Now he's eighty-four. He needs help getting dressed in the morning. He needs someone to manage his medications. He needs daily support to stay safely in the home he's lived in since retirement.

And there's a benefit available to him — right now — that could help pay for the in-home care he needs. He doesn't know about it. His family doesn't know about it. And no one has told them.

The benefit is called Aid and Attendance. It's a VA pension enhancement for veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily living activities. It can provide significant monthly financial assistance toward in-home care costs.

And it is one of the most underutilized benefits in the VA system.

What Aid and Attendance Is

Aid and Attendance is an enhanced pension benefit available to wartime veterans (and their surviving spouses) who require the assistance of another person to perform daily activities, are bedridden, or reside in a care facility.

It is not the same as standard VA healthcare. It's a separate pension benefit specifically designed to help pay for the daily care assistance that aging veterans need.

The benefit provides a monthly payment that can be used toward in-home care, assisted living, or nursing home costs. The amount varies based on the veteran's status (veteran vs. surviving spouse) and whether they have dependents.

Who Qualifies

To qualify, the veteran must have served at least 90 days of active duty with at least one day during a wartime period, have an honorable discharge, meet income and asset requirements (which were updated in recent years), and demonstrate the need for assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, or medication management.

Surviving spouses of wartime veterans may also qualify if they meet the financial and care-need criteria.

Many families assume their veteran parent won't qualify because of income or assets. The eligibility rules are more nuanced than most people realize — and certain assets (including a primary residence) may be excluded from calculations.

How to Apply

The application process involves submitting VA Form 21-2680 (Examination for Housebound Status or Permanent Need for Regular Aid and Attendance), along with medical evidence documenting the need for daily assistance, military discharge papers (DD-214), and financial documentation.

The process can be complex, and processing times vary. Many families benefit from working with a VA-accredited claims agent, an elder law attorney experienced in VA benefits, or a veterans service organization that provides free assistance with applications.

How Aid and Attendance Pays for In-Home Care

The monthly benefit can be applied directly toward in-home care costs. Geriatric Care Solutions accepts veterans benefits as a payment option — making professional, specialized in-home care accessible to veterans and surviving spouses who might otherwise assume they can't afford it.

For a veteran with dementia, the benefit can help fund Montessori Care-trained caregivers. For a veteran with wounds or incontinence, it can support Healing Ally or Always Fresh services. For a veteran approaching end of life, it can provide Care Bliss companionship.

The person who served their country deserves quality care. Aid and Attendance helps make that possible.

If Your Parent Is a Veteran

Start by gathering their military discharge papers (DD-214) and a current medical assessment of their daily care needs. Contact your local VA regional office, a veterans service organization, or an elder law attorney to discuss eligibility.

And if you'd like to understand how Geriatric Care Solutions can support your veteran family member — and how Aid and Attendance can help pay for that care — we're here to help.
