What are the Principles of Geriatric Care?

Aging is a process that can either leave the elderly robust and functional or with diminished physical and psychological abilities. The reduced physiologic capacity of older adults often increases their vulnerability to injury and illness. Taking care of elderly patients differs greatly from the care and treatment of younger patients. Geriatric care takes these differences into account when providing care to elderly patients. Geriatric care ensures that the elderly can live a comfortable and healthy life by providing them with the tools and support they need.

What are the Principles of Geriatric Care?

The basic principle of geriatric care is mainly to help identify functional impairments in the elderly and to find ways to maximize their residual function. The following are some of the principles of geriatric care.

Aging isn’t an Illness

Aging can occur at different rates, depending mainly on the individual. While aging does not lead to illnesses and disease, it does increase a person’s susceptibility to many illnesses. Some elderly individuals show signs of reduced physiological capacity early on, while others remain fully functional. It is important to keep this factor in mind when prescribing geriatric care for the elderly.

Elderly with Conditions that are Chronic, Multiple, or Multifactorial Need Geriatric Care

Elderly individuals are normally diagnosed with multiple chronic illnesses, which makes traditional care more challenging. For instance, the treatment of one chronic illness can have a negative effect on another medical condition.

Quality of Life is a Critical Outcome of Geriatric Care

Making sure that the elderly individual is able to remain functional and improve their overall quality of life is at the core of geriatric care services. Here, small differences can lead to a big difference in a person’s quality of life. Geriatric care managers are able to use standard tools to measure the activities of daily living and prescribe the necessary tools and social support to improve the person’s ability to carry out normal, everyday tasks

Geriatric Care is Multidisciplinary

The importance of the interdisciplinary aspect of geriatric care cannot be denied when it comes to delivering robust care to the elderly. Geriatric care brings together skills, communication, and collaboration to manage an elderly individual in need of care and support.

This is where multiple disciplines come into play, from nursing to rehabilitation therapists, pharmacists, and dieticians. It is up to the geriatric care manager to ensure that the right diagnosis is made, and the right combination of expertise is used for the care and wellbeing of an older person.

Geriatric Care Can be Offered in Different Settings

Elderly care can be in the form of home care services or in-home care services. Although used interchangeably, these are two different types of home care that are offered to the elderly.

Furthermore, these services may vary and need to be coordinated in order to avoid any unnecessary injuries or medical errors. The integrated, multi-discipline approach of geriatric care ensures that the patient is able to live independently without their age affecting their quality of life.
